Competition rules

The competition regulations will inform you on everything you need to know as a participant during the European Tournament for Dancing Students, from hereon called: ETDS.

GENERAL:

  1. The ETDS is a recurring dancing tournament for students, organised by the ETDS committee. This time in the name of Stichting ETDS Groningen 2019.
  2. The ETDS committee reserves the right to diverge from the rules stated in this document to rule in individual cases if conflict should arise.
  3. If a situation arises to which the rules stated in this document do not (sufficiently) apply, the ETDS committee will decide on the matter.

PARTICIPATION:

  1. Every student can participate in the ETDS, if this student is associated with a student dancing association by means of a membership of some sort.
  2. Participation to the ETDS by a non-student (from hereon external) is only possible if this person is associated with a student dancing association by means of a membership of some sort.
  3. The ETDS has 2 classes: Breitensport and CloseD/Open.
  4. Participants in the Breitensport will dance a qualification round based on which they will be divided into 4 subclasses: Amateurs, Professionals, Masters and Champions.
  5. Participants in CloseD/Open class will dance a qualification round which will decide whether they will dance CloseD or Open class.
  6. If the adjudicators notice during the first round that a couple’s level is too high for that class, it can be decided to move the couple to a higher class.
  7. Competition dancers will not be allowed to dance Breitensport with their own dancing partner if they dance competitions in or have danced competitions in the following classes:

(a) NADB: Debutants 2

(b) NDO: National amateurs

(c) WDC: National amateurs until B poule

(d) NVAD: Debutants 1

(e) Germany: D-class

(f) Germany (form.): Oberliga, Regionalliga

(g) Norway: Konkurranse

(h)Tsjech Republic: D-class

(i) United Kingdom: Intermediate

  1. Participants with more competition experience will be excluded from participating in Breitensport and can only compete in the CloseD/Open tournament if they dance or have danced in one of the following classes:

(a) NADB: Debutants 1, C-klasse ballroom and B-klasse latin

(b) NDO: Masterclass (if no other league applies)

(c) WDC: National amateurs A poule, masterclass B poule

(d) NVAD: Open class

(e) Germany: D-class, C-class

(f) Germany (form.): Regionalliga (latin), 2 + 1 Bundesliga

(g) Norway: Konkurranseklass

(h)Tsjech Republic: D-class, C-class

(i) United Kingdom: Intermediate, Advanced

Participating with your own dancing partner or member of your team is not allowed.

  1. If participants dance on different levels in different leagues, the highest level is assumed.
  2. Participants that have reached the top three in the highest subclass of the Breitensport at least twice, will be excluded from dancing in the Breitensport tournament and will participate in CloseD/Open class.
  3. Only when a certain class is short on leaders or followers, participants from a lower class can, after careful consideration with the ETDS committee, also participate in a higher class.
  4. A participant can only participate in a lower class as the opposite roll. Meaning leaders will have to follow and followers will have to lead.
  5. A participant will dance all dances in a discipline with the same partner.

DANCES:

  1. Participating in Breitensport Subclass Amateurs means that only the 3 basic dances of each discipline will be danced.
  2. Participating in Breitensport Subclass Professionals means that in the first rounds the 3 basic dances of each discipline will be danced, in semi finals standard the Vienese Walz will be added and in semi finals latin Samba will be added. In the finals the same 4 dances will be danced.
  3. Participating in Breitensport Subclass Masters means that in the first rounds the 3 basic dances of each discipline will be danced, in semi finals standard the Vienese Walz will be added and in semi finals latin Samba will be added. In the finals Slow foxtrot for standard and Paso Doble for latin will be added.
  4. Participating in Breitensport Subclass Champions means that in the first rounds the 3 basic dances of each discipline will be danced, in semi finals standard the Vienese Walz and Slow Foxtrot will be added and in semi finals latin Samba and Paso Doble will be added. In the finals the same 5 dances will be danced.
  5. Participating in CloseD/Open class means that only during qualification three basic dances will be danced per discipline. After qualification all five dances will be danced each round.

BLIND DATING:

  1. A participant without a dancing partner during the tournament will have the oppertunity to find a partner via a Blind Date event.
  2. If a participant is obliged to Blind Date (see articles 10 – 13), it is not allowed to dance with someone from the same team.
  3. If a participant is obliged to Blind Date (see articles 10 – 14), it is not allowed to dance with a (former) competition partner. This includes partners of student dancing tournaments during the past 2 years.

DRESS CODE:

  1. The Dress code for the ETDS Groningen for CloseD/Open and Breitensport are as follows:
    1. Competition clothing is not allowed, with the exception of latin trousers for the leader. Self applied glitters, stones and paillet are also seen as competition clothing and will not be permitted.
    2. Breasts, tummy, buttocks and hips need to be fully covered at all time (also during movement) with non transparent material other than skin colour. Visible underwear is not accepted either.
    3. In latin: the length of a skirt may not be shorter than pen length above the knee whilst standing still.
    4. Dress pants or dancing trousers are allowed.
  1. If a participant does not comply to the dress code mentioned above, he/she will be requested to rearrange his/her clothes or change into a different outfit before continuing the tournament.
  2. If the participant cannot or will not change their clothes, the organisation can decide to disqualify the participant.
  3. Dancing shoes or shoes with leather soles are mandatory on the dancing floor.
  4. Paraffin or oil is prohibited.
  5. If damage is caused to the dancing floor or sleeping hall floor due to the use of inappropriate shoes, the participant in question can be fined for the costs.
  6. It is not permitted to dance the competition bare feet or on socks.
